Tobacco Regulation Legislation to Hit U.S. House Floor
Please Help by Urging your Representative to VOTE YES on HR 1256!
Taking 5 minutes of time to call your member of the U.S. House of
Representatives will help ensure passage of HR 1256, legislation to grant the
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with the authority to regulate tobacco
products.
As a dental hygienist, you understand the impact that tobacco products have on
an individual’s total health. Tobacco products are currently among the least
regulated products sold in the country and are exempt from regulations that
apply to most other consumer products. HR 1256 would empower the FDA with the
authority to regulate the marketing, manufacturing, and sale of tobacco
products.
ADHA and a number of state dental hygiene associations have joined over 900
other organizations in the U.S. to advocate in support of HR 1256. The
legislation was introduced last year and made some great strides in generating
Congressional support, but it will take a collective effort to obtain passage
this year.
Please take just a few minutes of your time to call the member who represents
you in the U.S. House of Representatives to express your support for HR 1256. We
expect the House vote to come as early as March 30, 2009, so please call at your
earliest convenience.

Sample Phone Script:
Hi, my name is _______, and I am calling as a licensed dental hygienist and
member of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association. May I speak with the aide
who handles health issues?
I am calling as a constituent who lives in __[Your Town]__ to express my support
for HR 1256 the Family Smoking and Tobacco Control Act. The legislation would
give the FDA the authority to regulate the advertising, marketing, and
manufacturing of tobacco products. It would make it harder for tobacco companies
to advertise and sell their products to kids. This common-sense legislation is
very important to me and to my family.
Thank you in advance for your support of and attention to this important
legislation! If you require any additional information about HR 1256 or ADHA’s
work with the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids on this advocacy effort please feel
free to call ADHA at 312-440-8925 or e-mail at gov.affairs@adha.net.
