HOW TO CONTACT YOUR LEGISLATOR

Get the name of your Representative and Senator by contacting the Secretary of States’ office, House or Senate Information Office (number below), the Democratic or Republican parties in your area or by contacting one of the GDHA leaders. A "white book" can be requested by calling the House or Senate information offices—it has information about all the legislators in GA.

Before the session begins in January, contact your legislators at their home or work.

During the session (Jan.-Mar.), contact your legislators at the Capitol.

House Information office at 404-656-5082 or 1-800-282-5800--for Representative information.

Fax numbers can be acquired by calling each legislator’s office. Many legislators share a common fax. Attach a cover page or call ahead to let them know a fax is coming.

Letters should be mailed to: The Honorable Representative (or Senator)…

Legislative Office Building, Suite GA State Capitol

18 Capitol Square OR Suite

Atlanta, GA 30334 Atlanta, GA 30334

For copies of bills: (house bill) House Clerks Office 404-656-5015

(senate bill) Secretary of the Senate 404-656-5040

ALWAYS LEAVE A MESSAGE WITH YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION: name, address, phone number, email, etc., so your legislator can reach you.

Most effective letters are handwritten. Express the reasons your support the bill and/or what the issue means to you personally.

Have friends, family, colleagues, and patients write letters and make phone calls to legislators expressing their concerns.

When visiting the Capitol, at least one person in your party must sign in. Your personal belongings (purses, briefcases, etc.) may be searched upon entry—this is standard procedure.

Come prepared, with written material and contact information to leave with your legislator, if possible.

Contact GDHA leaders for supporting materials. Keep your visit brief but effective (make an appointment with your legislators secretary, if necessary).

You are the expert on dental hygiene! It is okay not to know an answer to a question. Contact GDHA leaders to report about your conversation with your legislators.

Remember, the legislator is there to represent you and you can expect a positive response with a little persistence. Persistence is the key to good communication. Do not be intimidated—get out there and make a difference.
