President's Message:

Dear Members,

I recently received my ADHA/GDHA renewal notice for dues.  It made me reflect on how much I value my membership in our professional association.  Our association provides a community that supports me personally, my profession, and directs my career advancement for the future, as well as, yours.

I love dental hygiene and my career is important and so is my membership.  Membership provides me with job security, protection of my education, and the right to maintain my investment in being a dental hygienists.  Along with that, I am given the right to vote to make changes within our profession.  I am also entitled to the right to voice my opinion on practice standards and policies, program development, legislation, scope of practice changes and share the opportunity to be with colleagues who understand what my daily practice is.

Forty three states already have general supervision and local anesthesia.  In Georgia, within the GDHA, there are hygienists who want legislative changes to raise our practice standards to this level of care for the public.  During the last legislative session, GDHA supported a bill that allowed access to oral health care for disabled persons.  It is likely to return with the next legislative session.  ADHA is in the process of developing curriculum for the creation of an Advanced Dental Hygiene Practioner.  I find this forward thinking exciting!

As American citizens, we register to vote so that we have a voice in who runs our government, votes on law changes, and other items that affect our lives.  Our taxes are our dues which pay for our roads, schools, medical, the military, police, and firefighters.  Without these things our country would be in total chaos.  Often, I hear concerns about the cost of our dues.  The cost is $18.75 a month, a mere $225.00 a year for security, protection, and the right to maintain our chosen profession.  It is cheaper than our taxes and provides us a more direct benefit.

Please take a moment to reflect on what is important to you within your profession.  I would hope you would enjoy the same benefits I am and decide to support our profession and our association with your time, talents, and finances.  I would encourage each of you to speak with colleagues who don't belong and invite them to join us.  Together we can make a difference.
