2010 Georgia Third Grade Oral Health Survey

The Georgia Dental Public Health Program wishes to notify dental

practices of the fall 2010 Third Grade Oral Health Survey which will

involve approximately 70 randomly selected schools throughout the state.

The survey is being carried out in accordance with CDC guidelines, and

is funded by a CDC Cooperative Agreement. The Department of Education is

supporting this important surveillance effort, and the Georgia School

Nurse Association is collaborating by helping with access to the

selected schools. Children will be screened for dental decay, sealants

and BMI. There will also be questions about visits to the dentist,

demographic questions and two nutritional questions on the parent forms.

If dental problems are identified, referrals will be made to local

dental practices.  A report will be made available on our website after

the epidemiologist has completed the data analysis.  We want you to be

informed in advance in case questions about the survey arise in your

community or at your children's schools. When dental professionals in the community

demonstrate knowledge and support for oral health surveillance,

principals and teachers tend to increase their willingness to

participate; you are important to the success of our survey efforts.  If

you have any questions about the Third Grade Oral Health Survey, please

contact the Director, Oral Health Prevention Program, Carol Smith, at:
